The WPA Rock Garden sits undiscovered by most visitors. Right next to the Fairytale Town parking lot and on the way to the duck pond, is this unique garden that is ideal for running around, playing hide and seek, and discovering nature. Although it is relatively small, you can't see the entire garden from any one spot…and so you don't.

We had to get out and WLP was a wonderful refuge. The flowers were in bloom, people were walking and practicing social distancing, kids were running and playing.

WPA Rock Garden was founded in 1940. The gardens celebrate Sacramento's legacy with tree-lined paths and a striking variety of flowers, plants, and birds. We visited WPA Rock Garden on a warm spring evening to take Brandon and Clarissa's engagement photos. I highly recommend visiting the park during springtime to enjoy the scents and beauty.

The WPA Rock Garden was constructed in the park rustic style by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) along with the installation of a rustic stone and wood arbor, granite curbs, an amphitheater and other park features found throughout William Land Park.
Sacramento’s WPA Rock Garden… Queen of the Dirt
William Land donated $250,000 for a public park, and from that bequest our beautiful 166.5 acre park was born! William Land Park was established in the 1920's, and it's gorgeous 9-hole golf course was was built in 1924. Land Park is 166.5 acres, and contains not only the golf course, but the popular Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town and Funderland.

WPA Rock Garden This is a tiny one-acre garden crammed full of a wide variety of plants, including a lot of California natives. It's beautifully maintained and provides photo opportunities throughout the year. Don't let its name fool you; it's not a garden full of nothing but rocks.
